Leadership Characteristics: Learned, Innate or Both?
[ send me this paper ]
This is an 8 page paper discussing leadership traits and whether or not the traits can be learned, are innate or both. Tutorial suggestions are inserted throughout the paper in square brackets. Theories of leadership whether historical or modern day all seem to include certain elements some of which appear to be learned and can be taught and others which can only be described as innate traits. Characteristics needed for good leadership include the ability to motivate people within an organization, the ability to communicate the mission of the organization and the ability to promote positive team work in order to increase production among other elements. Regardless of the fact that these elements can be taught within programs and are sought in individuals within organization, traditionally exceptional leaders also possess a vision for the future and ways in which to apply that vision successfully and a great deal of charisma. The elements of vision and charisma may be more difficult to learn and may be described as innate. Leadership courses will continue to be taught and guidelines for successful leadership will continue to be published which will contain essentially elements necessary in today’s leaders and leaders who have learned and apply these guidelines will no doubt be successful. However, based on historical leadership studies, those leaders who excel beyond the others will not doubt possess learned skills but also have the advantage of the innate elements of charisma and vision as well.
