Epicurean Ethics
[ send me this paper ]
A 5 page paper discussing the Epicurean view of good and evil (i.e.,
pleasure and pain) and the part that knowledge plays in bringing the happiness that should be the
goal of every individual. Epicurus (342-270 B.C.) maintained that the pursuit of pleasure was not
that which could be procured through physical enjoyments, but rather through contemplation.
Therefore knowledge can only contribute to the happy life, for increased knowledge can bring
increased assurance that the Epicurean way is the true one. Bibliography lists 1 source.

Epicurus' Observation
[ send me this paper ]
6 pages in length. Death, an entity greatly feared and misunderstood by humankind, is the representation of the end of life. Epicurus, however, took a decidedly different approach to one's mortality, postulating that death – in all
its ominous form – is truly nothing to one's existence. Indeed, death does represent the end of a particular period of time where one inhabits one's mortal body, yet according to Epicurus it also represents rebirth and a time for rejuvenation. The connection that exists between life and death is often viewed as quite segmented, with one having little to do with the other. Epicurus was determined to bridge this ever-widening gap by demonstrating how death is not only a significant and very important part of life, but
that it in no way detracts from one's time spent as a mortal being. Bibliography lists 2 sources.

Ernst Cassirer: Language & Myth (1946)
[ send me this paper ]
(5 pp) Philosophers are always asking themselves
questions. What a philosopher is trying to do,
is figure out the way in which people understand
the world, or their sense and place of reality in
the world. The German philosopher, Ernst Cassirer
(1874- 1945) felt that we use mentally created
symbols to understand our current reality. It was
Cassirer's idea that scientific laws, theories of
religion and the unique qualities of a given
language were all symbols, which we as humans
create to facilitate understanding the world.
The logic of understanding then is to give some
sense of order in the chaos of the world that we
face on a daily basis.
