Ethiopian Women: The Adverse Impacts of Culture and Economics
[ send me this paper ]
A 15 page discussion of the many hardships faced by Ethiopian women as a result of their culture and the harsh economic realities of life in Ethiopia. Not only are these women oppressed by the lack of livable wage work in their home regions, they often live in abusive homes and even when they escape those homes they find little viable employment in the cities. Many women, in fact, are forced into the industry of prostitution. This paper explores the options available to Ethiopia’s women and suggests that the recent advent of women’s groups is a step in the right direction but that in order to changed the lives of these women we must address both Ethiopian culture and entrepreneurial options. Evaluation of Minor Women in Chopin’s “The Awakening”
[ send me this paper ]
A 5 page paper examining the minor women in Kate Chopin’s late work. Madame Lebrun is not “invisible” but is diminished in significance through her “impertinence” and failure to see others accurately. Young black women in the employ of white or Creole women are just invisible, to the point that Chopin does not even name them. Madame Antoine is not totally invisible in the manner of the others, but Edna accepts her thoughtfulness without a glimmer of gratitude. It appears that Chopin’s own experiences and society as it existed at the end of the 19th century when Chopin was writing colored her own view and use of women of color. Bibliography lists 1 source.

Fairy Tales: Lasting Influence On Attitudes Later In Life
[ send me this paper ]
5 pages in length. It is not difficult to realize that impressionable young girls are getting their first introduction to female relationships and sisterhood through a fairy tale that places sibling love and respect below all other aspects of a healthy relationship. Additionally, young readers are taught that the world is dominated by patriarchal figures to which women are not allowed to oppose, being forced to abide by the rules set down for them without making any fuss. Laurence Behrens and Leonard J. Rosen, authors of Writing and Reading Across the Curriculum, contend it is no wonder that young girls grow up into womanhood with a distorted impression of love, relationships and sisterhood, inasmuch as when they finally embark upon the real world, they are rudely awakened to the fact that life is nothing like it had been portrayed in the well-worn fairy tale Cinderella. Various vignettes throughout the book illustrate the manner by which this particular fairy tale gives young girls the wrong lesson about female relationships. No additional sources cited.

Family Violence: A Plan for Societal Intervention
[ send me this paper ]
An 8 page discussion of the societal factors which translate into family violence. The author contends that distinct differences exist between families in the way they deal with conflict. Families either facilitate or inhibit the use of aggression. Given this fact, therefore, it becomes obvious that there must be ways to prevent and treat violence. Indeed, family violence is not just a family issue, it is a societal one. If we are to resolve that issue we must be willing to implement changes on a societal level. This change must address the sometimes discriminatory manner in which family violence is often dealt with in the legal system as well as an increase in the professional personnel resources which we are willing to devote to the problem. Bibliography lists 9 sources.
