George Orwell's '1984': Pertinence To Today's Society
[ send me this paper ]
6 pages in length. Perhaps George Orwell's prophetic novel about a totalitarian existence was merely a result of the author's overactive imagination. Maybe, however, it was a warning. Orwell, himself, said he did not believe such a society as he describes in '1984' would ever arrive; however, he did believe that something resembling it most definitely could. What is made crystal clear is that when human beings are put to the test -- truly dissected to the core -- there is no room for any concern for anyone other than themselves. Humanity is selfish and power hungry, which the novel illustrates ever so clearly. As is with all life forms, those who demand power are the ones who very often receive it. This mentality is what Orwell envisioned for the entire world -- a world in which the government could see and hear everything, where a person could never be alone, and his or her most personal information would be instantly available to all who requested it. One can only hope that the Orwellian, thought-controlled future is one that remains firmly in the clutches of fantasy. Bibliography lists 5 sources.

Gilbert & Terrell's "Dimensions Of Social Welfare Policy": Summary Of Chapter 3
[ send me this paper ]
2 pages in length. Summarizing the integral components of chapter 3 in Gilbert and Terrell's "Dimensions of Social Welfare Policy" provides a framework for social welfare analysis that strives to overcome the barriers inherent to contemporary policymaking. The authors approach this need for change as a means by which to implement "dimensions of choice" (Gilbert et al, 1997, p. 56) where social welfare policy is concerned, helping to adjust reality through "culling and distilling the essential elements of complex phenomena" (p. 56). Girls, Delinquency, and Juvenile Justice
[ send me this paper ]
A 5 page book review and analysis of Girls, Delinquency, and Juvenile Justice by Meda Chesney-Lind and Randall G. Shelden. These authors make an excellent argument that the topic of female delinquency has been serious neglected, or shoehorned to fit pre-existing theories on delinquency that are predicated on male experience. The authors argue that there are distinct differences between male and female delinquency that large derives from an increased incidence of both sexual and physical abuse experienced by girls. Given Its Record To Date, It Is Hard To Justify The Continuing Existence Of The Un Commission On Human Rights
[ send me this paper ]
6 pages in length. From Locke to Hume and myriad other philosophers in between, the issue of natural rights has evolved from those who both share and oppose specific ideals associated with humanity's intrinsic privilege.
