Article Review of “Behavioral Counseling to Increase Consumption of Fruit and Vegetables in Low Income Adults” by Steptoe et al (2003)

This is a 5 page paper reviewing Steptoe et al (2003) trial “Behavioral Counseling to Increase Consumption of Fruit and Vegetables in Low Income Adults”. Investigators Steptoe et al (2003) conducted a randomized trial to study the effect behavioral counseling had in regards to increasing the consumption of fruit and vegetables in low income adults. The investigators were successful in outlining their assumptions for the study, participants, methods, assessment and measurements, results and conclusion in addition to including the limitations of their study. Using 271 participants aged 18-70 years old from a deprived ethnically mixed inner city area, the investigators conducted brief individual behavioral counseling sessions with groups based on the stage of change model as opposed to time matched nutrition education counseling. Assessment of self reported number of portions of fruit and vegetables as well as plasma carotene, tocopherol, ascorbic acid concentrations and urinary potassium excretion levels were taken at baseline, eight weeks and 12 months after the counseling sessions. Overall, it was found that consumption of fruit and vegetables increased in the behavioral (by 1.5 portions) and nutrition (by 0.9 portions) groups as well as an increase in the plasma carotene and tocopherol concentrations but the carotene levels were has a significantly higher increase in the behavioral group. The percentage of persons eating five or more portions per day increased by 42% in the behavioral group and 27% in the nutrition group. The investigators were able to surmise from these results that “brief individual counseling in primary care can elicit sustained increases in consumption of fruit and vegetables in low income adults in the general population” (Steptoe et al, 2003, p. 855).

Basis for an Evaluation of the Effectiveness of a Rehabilitation Program: 8-Week, Ten-Bed Facility for Homeless, Pregnant Teens with Substance Abuse Problems

This is a 5 page paper discussing the effectiveness of an 8-week rehabilitation program. An 8-week program within a ten-bed facility is evaluated regarding its substance abuse rehabilitation and effectiveness for pregnant, homeless teen clients and is compared with other programs and research. The program addresses health, psychological and social issues in addition to substance abuse and prevention of relapse. As in almost all drug treatment facilities, “three out of four teens in drug treatment drop out of their programs before finishing”. Most drug treatment programs are based on a minimum 90-day program, considered the minimum required for the best prevention against relapse, in which case an 8 week program of ~ 60 days may have a slightly higher completion rate, in that the program is not as long, but also a higher relapse rate within the teens after they leave the program. If only 3-4 teens out of 10 complete 90-day programs, a 60-day program may have a completion rate slightly higher in that perhaps 4-5 teens may complete the program. Overall, an 8-week substance abuse rehabilitation program for teens by all accounts seems to be too short to have any long term effect providing that the teens even complete the program. In addition, the teens in this program were pregnant and homeless. In most cases then, the program would not even cover the time of the pregnancy which would release these teens back out on the street in the same basic state in which they entered the program. The program should be at least as long as the pregnancy and an additional six months within the program would prove even more beneficial. In this time, the teen could acquire more contact with community social and medical care facilities and programs in additional to learning valuable medical care, family planning and care of the child if she desires to keep the infant. In addition, because a child is involved, the social and community services need to be involved from the onset in regards to the social planning while the facility can focus on the substance abuse factors and programming for the teen.

Behavioral & Experiential Approaches to Family Therapy

A 15 page paper using literature analysis to prove the hypothesis that though there is a much greater volume of current research and reporting based in behavioral therapy rather than experiential, the lack of similar work based in the experiential model is not indicative of that method's validity or effectiveness. Rather, there is a common blurring of boundaries between the two methods in which therapy will begin with emphasis in one method but then introduce aspects of the other. The behavioral model is more easily quantitatively analyzed for research reporting, lending itself more readily to analysis than does the experiential model, which has a more emotional base and is more difficult to verify through standard research means.
