Franklin Pierce, America's 14th President
[ send me this paper ]
An 11 page paper discussing the
administration and background of the 14th President. Franklin Pierce was not a bad president,
but neither was he an exceptionally good one. He set off to plot a course for the country that
he believed would be beneficial, but the expansion to which Pierce was dedicated succeeded
only in inflaming calls for war. Though he believed he was taking the nation forward, in reality
he was taking it forward into civil war. His personal life was tragic, and it appears he chose
not to see the tragedy of the Civil War toward which his policies took the country. Most
personal details are from the 1852 account of friend Nathaniel Hawthorne. Bibliography lists 9
sources.
