Bram Stoker's "Dracula," Oscar Wilde's "The Picture Of Dorian Gray" And Flann O’Brien’s "At Swim-Two-Birds": In Depth Critical Analysis And Comparison
[
send me this paper ]
20 pages in length. Bram Stoker's Dracula, Oscar Wilde's The Picture of Dorian Gray and Flann O'Brien's At Swim-Two-Birds appear to be about as diverse as any three stories can be; however, while there is the admitted variance between and among these tales, there is also a common denominator that binds three seemingly unrelated themes. The struggle for acceptance in Stoker's Dracula, the obsessive nature of self-love in Wilde's Dorian Gray and the ability to laugh at society in O'Brien's Birds brings to light how three distinctive stories are able to come together under the guise of human conflict and successfully share the same thematic point. At the same time, however, all three stories possess their own unique contribution to the literary world, in that each one stands apart from the others in specific ways. Bibliography lists 3 sources.

Capitalism: Democracy’s Bane
[ send me this paper ]
Martin Luther King, Jr. said that anyone living in the states should never be considered an outsider, but Henry David Thoreau points out that the United States is not truly a society of people, but a country made up of individuals with only their own needs to consider, under the law. As such, their capitalist pursuits destroy their democracy. Yet they do not see it and are incapable of changing it. Bibliography lists 5 sources. jvCapDem.rtf

Characterization: Good And Evil
[ send me this paper ]
5 pages in length. Literary history demonstrates that good and evil do not exist merely in people who are good or evil but rather as abstract forces battling within them. As a direct result, readers of such works find few characters who can be called good or evil, with particular emphasis upon Melville, Thoreau and Whitman. Bibliography lists 7 sources.

Characters in Victorian Literature
[ send me this paper ]
This 5 page paper outlines some of the themes and elements relative to characterizations in Victorian literautre. Throughout Victorian literature, the view of the other, of a character who is an outcast or outsider in Victorian society, has been played an important role in creating conflict and contrast. Heathcliff of Wuthering Heights, Little Dorrit’s Rigaud and Fosco in The Woman in White are all examples of the Other, and all of these characters have a significant power or a supernatural sensibility that separates them from other characters. Bibliography lists 10 sources.

Cheikh Hamidou Kane's "Ambiguous Adventure" And Sembene Ousmane's "God's Bits Of Wood": Journey
[ send me this paper ]
5 pages in length. The journey motif plays an important role in both Cheikh Hamidou Kane's Ambiguous Adventure and Sembene Ousmane's God's Bits of Wood, as does the theme of reconciling traditional African values with the values and technologies of the West. The ways in which the 'journeys' to this 'golden mean' are both similar and different speaks to the inherent drive for freedom that is achieved only through the endless parade of progression. No bibliography.

Chekhov and Anderson: Human Nature
[ send me this paper ]
Reality is a matter of what is familiar and agreeable, while on the other hand, also refers to what is concealed and kept out of sight. This 7 page paper explores the representation of the inner and outer reality of the characters in Anton Chekhov's The Lady With A Pet Dog and Sherwood Anderson's Death In The Woods. Bibliography lists 8 sources.

Chekhov And Oates: "The Lady With The Pet Dog" - Comparing The Two Protagonists
[ send me this paper ]
3 pages in length. Gender perspective serves as the defining difference between Joyce Carol Oates and Anton Chekhov's respective versions of The Lady With the Pet Dog. While two couples in love represent the common denominator shared by both stories, the image of gender weakness is a decidedly blatant and undermining attribute of Oates' female character. Moreover, the way in which the authors describe her comes from two entirely different perspectives, with Chekhov regarding her as proud, dignified and lovely, while Oates can only focus upon her overall shortcomings when giving literary life to her protagonist. Bibliography lists 2 sources.
