Nada By Carmen Laforet
[ send me this paper ]
A 5 page essay that analyzes the book by Carmen Laforet. Nada is the first novel written by noted Spanish author Carmen Laforet. First published in 1944, some critics have regarded this work as autobiographical as it recounts the spiritual desolation of a country emerging from civil war. Many have regarded this work as a feminist reworking of the Bildungsroman or "novel of maturation." However, others have offered a contrasting point of view that the main character, Andrea, does not appear to adhere to this model of development due to her extreme passivity. The writer discusses alternate views and the essential symbolism of the novel. No additional sources cited.

Orientalism in “Wide Sargasso Sea” by Jean Rhys
[ send me this paper ]
This is a 10 page paper discussing the idea of Orientalism and the novel the “Wide Sargasso Sea”. Jean Rhys’ novel “Wide Sargasso Sea” is a good example of imperialism and colonization from the perspective of someone other than the colonists which makes it a good example of the Orientalist method of literature. As the Orientalists vision can promote the difference between the ‘familiar’, in the case of the novel, England and the ‘strange’, or the Caribbean, Rhys does a good job at distinguishing her main character’s acceptance of the people, culture and landscape in contrast to the English colonists who live there.

Passage Criticism from Jean Rhys’ “Wide Sargasso Sea”
[ send me this paper ]
This is a 5 page paper discussing elements of imagery and figurative language used throughout a passage in “Wide Sargasso Sea”. Jean Rhys uses vivid elements of imagery and figurative language to set the themes and tone throughout the novel “Wide Sargasso Sea”. In doing this, Rhys often shows oppositions within the environment in which certain characters must remain for the structure to remain consistent. A passage found on pages 65 and 66 (Penguin edition) relates Rochester leaving his structured world and getting lost in the forest to be later rescued by Baptiste. Within the forest, Rochester finds the forest to be dark and hostile as the bushes and branches grab at his legs. The only elements of civilization he finds are a road and a stone house which are overgrown and deserted. His relationship with Baptiste within the forest also differs with that outside of the forest. The passage overall contains many useful elements used throughout the novel which express the foreign aspects of the islands which are seen as dark, hostile and decayed from the colonial point of view.

Patrick Chamoiseau's "Red Hot Peppers": Morality
[ send me this paper ]
5 pages in length. The structural basis of imagery is symbolic of Chamoiseau's intrinsic creativity and ability to see beyond the obvious. Characteristically reminiscent of the very essence of the author's literary interpretation, Red Hot Peppers reflects a significance quite distinguishable in its ability to address morality with mere images. The entire reason that storytelling exists is to present an image through the written word; thus, imagery is a critical element to Chamoiseau's literary verse. Not surprisingly, the author possesses a magnificent grasp upon the use of imagery as a means by which to clearly demonstrate his interpretation of morality and human conflict. Rodolfo Usigli's "El Gesticulador Y Otras Obras De Teatro"
[ send me this paper ]
3 pages in length. The obvious importance of Rodolfo Usigli's "El Gesticulador Y Otras Obras De Teatro" is the author's quest to reconstruct Mexican history as it has been documented throughout the past. In assessing the particular importance of Usigli's motivation behind re-writing the revolutionary past is its seemingly unrelated association to contemporary society. The writer discusses how post-colonialism was a reaction to and a critique of the colonial dichotomy, inasmuch as there existed a defiant urge to do away with the overwhelming oppression of involuntary change.
