Like Water for Chocolate / Movie and Book Comparison
[ send me this paper ]
In 7 pages, the author compares the movie and book versions of Like Water for Chocolate or Como agua para chocolate by Laura Esquivel. It is a story that is too hot to handle: forbidden love, matriarchal dominance, the supernatural, and the special Mexican recipes that become more than enticing dishes. The protagonist is Tita, the youngest daughter in a family of three daughters who, because of a tradition imposed by her mother, is not allowed to marry the man she loves. When comparing the movie version and the novel, one will note that the movie version evokes images of mistreatment, disdain, and provocation, which are not in the book. A free Roman Numeral Sentence Outline is included. Bibliography lists 10 sources.

Maria Irene Fornes: The Conduct of Life.
[ send me this paper ]
(6 pp) Theater has an ancient definitive term that
has held it in good stead for quite some time. It
is called the "suspension of disbelief." What it
means is that when I go into the theater, I am
willing to take the risk of not understanding
everything that I see. I may even believe thing
that I really haven't seen, but it feel as though I
have. Maria Ire Fornes is a master of this ancient
skill of the suspension of disbelief. We will
discuss it in her 1985 play, The Conduct of Life.

Maryse Conde's "I, Tituba, Black Witch Of Salem": Balancing Suffering And Happiness
[ send me this paper ]
3 pages in length. Tituba, the only black woman to be accused of witchery, had many conflicting issues in her life, not the least of which were trying to distinguish a balance between suffering and happiness in order to construct a meaningful life. In her attempt to achieve this elusive balance, she must often make a choice between freedom and love. By having to make this choice, one might readily surmise that while freedom, love and happiness were
of paramount importance to her, none of them could be achieved without suffering. The writer discusses this topic as it relates to Maryse Conde's "I, Tituba, Black Witch of Salem." No additional sources cited.
