Social Justice/Ihara Saikaku & Nawal El Saadawi
[ send me this paper ]
A 4 page essay that contrasts and compares two short stories, Ihara Saikaku's "Barrelmaker Brimful of Love" and Nawal El Saadawi's "In Camera." Saikaku's story is set in seventeenth century Japan and El Saadawi's narrative is set in twentieth century Egypt, yet both authors relate their particular society's perspective on social justice, in regards to women's place in society. In so doing, these stories demonstrate that the position of women in each of these societies is similar despite the differences in time and locale. In each story, women are pictured as secondary to the main thrust of societal interest. In both stories, one sees an emphasis of the power of male authority and the importance to these cultures that women remain subjugated and controlled. No bibliography is offered.

The Nature of Gender Roles in the Tale of Ramayana and the Gender Roles Found Today
[ send me this paper ]
This is an 8 page paper discussing gender roles in Ramayana and those of today. The tale of Ramayana first said to be written around the year 1000 B.C. outlines the traditional gender roles in dharma. Rama as the male role model was obedient to his parents and faithful to his wife and eventually led an army to rescue her as would a traditional hero. Sita is Rama’s faithful and beautiful wife who follows him when he is banished in the forest, is faithful to him when she is abducted and obedient to him when he asks her to perform a test of her chastity. The tale has provided gender models for thousands of years and has also undergone various reinterpretations which constantly redefine the roles of Sita and Rama. In some versions, Sita is a strong and powerful woman who is humiliated by her husband’s request. Despite the different versions which exist, modern day Indian women and men and Indian communities in the western world have been found to have different gender roles. While many families still have “traditional” roles with the woman in charge of the house and children and obedient to her husband, still other studies have found that many modern Indian women today see themselves as independent professionals and in many cases, the major wage earners in their households. Bibliography lists 7 sources.

The Operative Dynamics of Modern Chinese Poetry
[ send me this paper ]
An 11 page discussion of the linguistic and thematic structure of modern Chinese poetry. Analyzes the poem “Into the Mountains” by Yang Mu to present examples of metaphor, simile, comparison, and personification. This paper emphasizes that essentially modern Chinese poetry relies on the same use of semantics as do Western forms of poetry. Other considerations enter the picture, however, when these poems are translated into English. In this instance, the translator has essentially as much power as the poet in changing subtle components of a poem with the manipulation of the English words which he uses to convey the meaning. While it is useful to analyze the semantics of modern Chinese poetry from an operative structure standpoint therefore, it is perhaps even more useful to analyze this poetry from a thematic standpoint. Bibliography lists 4 sources.
