Chivalry in Ivanhoe.
[ send me this paper ]
(5 pp) Whenever we think of the word "chivalry,"
it is either in the context of "being dead"-not a
pretty thought, or we think of knights and damsels
in distress, waiting to be rescued by said knight.
In its most positive sense, the word conjures
other times of gentility and good manners. Walter
Scott's 1719 novel Ivanhoe is certainly a basic
place to start if one wants to know more about the
ideas and actions of chivalry.

D.H. Lawrence's Sons And Lovers and
James Joyce's A Portrait Of The Artist As A Young Man share a similarity
between them that is central to understanding the protagonists. This 5

characters is to make claims for their autonomy. The inward analysis
that each wallows in does not imply self-consciousness, but rather the
belief in the significance of living as an individual. No additional

Douglas Hyde/Preserving Irish
[ send me this paper ]
A 14 page research paper that investigates the work of Douglas Hyde (1860-1949), who was a scholar, playwright and cultural revivalist. He grew up in an area of Ireland that was rich with tradition and where the Irish language was still spoken by some of its inhabitants. Hyde received his education at Trinity College where he studied ancient Gaelic (Jang). By 1892, Hyde recognized that his native culture was in danger of completely perishing, despite a passionate national spirit. In a lecture given before the newly formed Irish National Literary Society on November 24, 1892, Hyde laid out the parameters of the problem and what he saw as the solution -- the de-Anglicization of Ireland. This examination of Hyde's philosophy demonstrates the utility of his plays, written in the Irish language, for exporting and promoting his philosophy in regards to the preservation of the Irish language and Irish culture. Elizabeth Bowen’s “The Demon Lover”
[ send me this paper ]
This is a 4 page paper discussing the various perspectives of Elizabeth Bowen’s short story “The Demon Lover”. The analysis is preceded by a brief biography of the Bowen. Elizabeth Bowen’s short story “The Demon Lover” is considered one of her most analyzed and controversial works in terms of content and implied intention of the writer. Written during the beginning of World War II, the story is about a woman, Mrs. Kathleen Drover, who returns to her home to pick up some things to take back to her family while they are staying in the country during the bombing. Or is it? Critics of the story have various theories about the actual intent and events which take place in the tale. While some critics view the story purely from a horror perspective in which her former psychotic lover from World War I returns, other critics believe that her journey is one from a psychological perspective while others again argue that the tale was written in an allegorical sense and depicts the horror and terror of war itself.
