"Wallace Stevens' 'Americana' and the American Renaissance"
[ send me this paper ]
A five page paper showing how this poem, written in 1950, reflects back on authors of the American Renaissance such as Ralph Waldo Emerson and Walt Whitman. The paper explores Stevens' belief that in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, Americans grew to justify materialism and conformity on the mistaken belief that it's the American way, when in fact the writers of the American Renaissance held quite a different philosophy. "White Noise": A Critical Essay on the Book by Don DeLillo
[ send me this paper ]
Describes this book as a testament to the cultural void in which we conduct our contemporary lives. The book is centered around the life of a family who is, to say the least, an odd assortment of individuals who appear to attract the company of even odder individuals. These lives are shaped to a large degree by an ever present consumerism and the ironic and philosophical view of death. No additional sources are listed.

"Wuthering Heights": Revenge
[ send me this paper ]
6 pages in length. Paramount to the theme of revenge is the acknowledgment of the self-inflicted abuse Heathcliff imparts upon himself as he attempts to regain control of his own life. Never quite able to be comfortable in his own skin, Heathcliff always wanted for more – more respect, more understanding and certainly more of Catherine. With slight exception, his desires were forever met with disappointment. Inasmuch as Heathcliff completely loses himself in Catherine, it can readily be argued that the thematic importance of this aspect clearly relates to his desire to break free from the patriarchal control he has experienced throughout his life, never quite able to see himself as anything other than a lowly social outcast amidst a sea of transparent elitism. Bibliography lists 3 sources.

'Eveline' by James Joyce
[ send me this paper ]
A 6 page paper which presents a general overview of James
Joyce's short story 'Eveline.' Eveline, despite the fact that her family life was somewhat
dysfunctional, was afraid to take the final step and move on with the life which was
offered her. She was typical of individuals who feel they are not prepared to live a life
away from those who possess the control and power. Eveline also presents us with a
picture of one who may never be ready or prepared to be independent. No additional
sources cited.
