The Environment and Japan:the Ashio Copper Mine
[ send me this paper ]
8 pages. This interesting paper focuses on the impact of Tanako Shozo, Japan's first environmentalist, and the Ashio Copper Mine. In 1885 it was recognized that pollution from the mine had become widespread when people noticed thousands of fish in the Watarase River were dead because of water pollution. Additionally, sludge from the mine caused heavy flooding and the amount of metal pollution in the river depleted the rice production. Environmentalists such as Tanaka Shozo show us that while environmental laws are essential, there are still other ways to accomplish the many goals that still have to be attained. 8 pages in length. As the world looks ahead to ensure the availability of its global food supply, talk of implementing regulatory reform in the South has become more and more pertinent. While a number of regulatory reform acts have been utilized in the past, there still appears to remain a need for even better improvements and stricter control.
