Case Study: Socio-Cultural Aspects Of Education
[ send me this paper ]
11 pages in length. With the student teaching populations of primarily Hmong and Hispanic individuals, there are several issues to be addressed, not the least of which include stereotypical attitudes, gender discrimination and social class oppression. The young men are typically between seventeen and nineteen years of age and have had significant dealings with the law; as such, their attitudes toward education in particular and social structure in general do not reflect well within the classroom. The student's concern appears to be twofold: 1) abandoning her own ingrained stereotypical issues so that her attention is equally divided among the classroom and 2) addressing the school's distasteful practice of shuffling otherwise unqualified individuals through the system as a means by which to obtain grant funds. The bigger picture, however, is assessing the importance and quality of education within America's school system, inasmuch as special education programs, such as the one in which the student is involved, tend to turn the instructor into more of a glorified baby sitter than one who imparts knowledge. The writer discusses social and economic oppression as they relate to furthered education. Bibliography lists 15 sources.
