Should The Insanity Defense Be Broadened?
[ send me this paper ]
6 pages in length. There is no set guideline as to what denotes mental illness in relation to the misuse of the insanity plea, which was a problem for the first case back in Victorian England. In fact, virtually anyone can employ this particular defense just as long as the individual's lawyer knows how to utilize it to the fullest extent. How would the line be effectively drawn in order to afford the insanity defense for those individuals who truly need it, while at the same time thwarting efforts of others not so deserving? Relevant sociological theories include those that postulate the reasons behind the need for any insanity plea. These theories address society's compulsion to assess such problems and then neatly place them in a convenient package. Indeed, the criminally insane must be protected from themselves in order to better fit in with society; as such, the inclusion of the insanity defense fits in quite well with the need to shuffle social problems from one area to another. Bibliography lists 9 sources.

Social Consequences of Thievery in Saudi Arabia Verses the United States
[ send me this paper ]
An 8 page discussion of the differences which exist in punishment and the incidence of criminal acts in Saudi Arabia and the United States. While an emphasis is put on theft, other criminal acts such as murder, adultery, and apostasy (the conversion of a Muslim to Christianity) are also considered. The author of this paper contends that the differences which exist in these countries’ crime rates relates to societal expectations as well as to the degree of punishment which can be expected. The point is made that while punishment in Saudi Arabia may seem harsh and reprehensible from a western perspective, it is certainly effective in reducing the country’s crime rate. Bibliography lists 6 sources.

Social Control Theory.
[ send me this paper ]
(4 pp) Social Control theorists start with the
premise that human behavior is by nature
antisocial and delinquent. They focus on
restraining or "controlling" factors that are
broken or missing inside the personalities of
criminals. If these restraining factors are
thought to involve society in some way, as with
the sociological notion that norms are
internalized, then the theory is said to be a
"social" control theory. Durkheim and Hirschi
are discussed. Bibliography lists 5 sources.
