Public Images and the Influence on Views of Crime
[ send me this paper ]
This 4 page paper relates the fact that public images can influence views on crime. The mass media has served as a basis for our cultural understanding and response to news events, and it is not surprising that theorists like Kathleen Daly have related the belief that the mass media has a substantial influence on the public's understanding of policies on crime. Bibliography lists 3 sources.

Racial Profiling: Fact or Fallacy?
[ send me this paper ]
A 4 page overview of the common misperception that racial profiling accounts for the disproportionate representation that some minorities have in our criminal justice system. Noting that this fallacy is often stretched to imply concern over implications in the post-September 11 environment, the author emphasizes that the fact is that a particular culture’s propensity for crime, not their race is what lands them in our nation’s prisons. Bibliography lists 5 sources.

Racist Crime: Victim Experiences Relating to Retaliations for the September 11, 2000 World Trade Center and Pentagon Disasters
[ send me this paper ]
A 10 page overview of the concept of racist crime. Notes the events which are unfolding in our country today are essentially the same as those which have been targeted against one race or ethnicity or another throughout American history. The criminal activity which is all too often associated with such mindset has been recently termed hate crimes. Although there are many examples of such crimes, there is no better example of the deplorability of these crimes than the condemnable actions which too many in our populace are taking today against Arabic peoples in a form of societal retaliation for the September 11 World Trade Center and Pentagon disasters. Bibliography lists 6 sources.

Rape, Responsibility, and Gender Perception
[ send me this paper ]
A 4 page discussion of how societal perceptions of gender enter into the equation of responsibility for one's actions. The author investigates responsibility in Joyce Carol Oates' "Where Are You Going, Where Have You Been?" (a short story fictionalizing the real-life murders of Charles Schmid in the 1960s) with articles by Susan Jacoby, Ellen Goodman, and Lara Adair. Bibliography lists 4 sources.

Rehabilitation Verses Punishment: An Ethical Consideration
[ send me this paper ]
A 9 page discussion of the ethics of crime and punishment. While some might be aghast at rendering stiff punishment for criminal activity and in favor of rehabilitation instead, this paper contends that severe punishment is in the better interest of society as a whole. Bibliography lists 5 sources.

Rise Of The Victim: Impact Upon Criminal Justice
[ send me this paper ]
10 pages in length. Re-establishing -- or in some cases establishing for the first time -- victim rights has sent a tidal wave of unprecedented movement throughout the criminal justice system. That victims have typically been forced to prove their innocence within a system that purports to protect those who have fallen prey to criminal activity has long spoken to the need for a global-wide re-evaluation of how the entire criminal justice process works. With the implementation of the restorative justice movement -- which is 'over two decades old and extends at least as far back as the mid-1970s...' (Immarigeon, 2001, p. PG) -- the rise of the victim has become a mantra for validating once more the essence of victim rights. Bibliography lists 18 sources.

Robert K. Merton's Anomie Theory And Gang Violence
[ send me this paper ]
15 pages in length. There exist a number of components critical to the overall understanding of the Robert K. Merton's anomie theory. That a clear connection can be made between crime and one's social/economic status speaks volumes about the nature of humanity. Indeed, evidenced by the author's rationale is the fact that advanced nations appear to endure a higher level of crime due to their vastly segregated social and economic status, leaving the door wide open for resentment and intolerance, which effectively translates into criminal activity. Merton, highly regarded as one of the most influential sociologist of the twentieth century, re-established Emile Durkheim's original anomie theory that stated humanity's goal-achieving methods severely conflicted with the ultimate goal. When taken in the context of the American Dream, one can better understand the antagonistic relationship that exists between socio-economic limitations and the intrinsic human desire to achieve; as such, one can also readily realize how this struggle applies to gang violence. Merton states this theory based upon five fundamental adaptations: conformity, innovations, ritualistic, retreatist or rebellion. Bibliography lists 15 sources.
