Bail Hostel: Organization Structure, Culture, and Strategy

A 5 page overview of Bail Hostels. Contends that bail hostels offer an effective means of community supervision for a number of categories of people. Individuals who could benefit from a bail hostel program include the homeless, the elderly, the mentally ill, and individuals on probation. One of the most productive uses of the bail hostel system, however, is in their use as alternative housing criminals. Such use could, under certain circumstances, be more economical and efficient than typical prison scenarios. There are, however, a number of considerations which must be made in the bail hostel environment. These considerations include funding, management and staffing, supervision, equal opportunity issues, community interaction, risk management, physical configuration of the facility. Battered Women’s Syndrome

Notes that although domestic abuse is not a new component of our society, it is one which has seemingly become a more prominent component in recent years. Contends that with our increased awareness of this phenomenon we have begun to consider the psychological impacts which battered women sustain, impacts which sometimes drive them to violence and even murder. As a consequence, the concept of the battered woman has now entered the courtroom not solely as a description of a plaintiff but as a defense strategy for a women who has committed a violent crime as a result of the psychological trauma to which she has been subjected.
