Martin Luther King’s Rhetorical Communications Tools
[ send me this paper ]
Martin Luther King, Jr.’s speech I Have a Dream on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial in 1963 celebrating the centennial of the signing of the Emancipation Proclamation remains one of his most intelligent and poetic speeches in the American mind. It succeeded at accomplishing this by a dynamically synthesized use of communication techniques while seeking to avoid division, as well as making potentially offensive judgments against a country where black men and women were still segregated. His accomplishment is in inducing the listener to not only participate in his dream, but remember it forever, long after the militant days of civil unrest were over. His knowledge of pathos, logos and other rhetorical techniques served King well. Included are ethos, logos, pathos, contrast, connection, anaphora, analogy, induction, deduction and others. 3 works cited. jvMLKcom.rtf

[ send me this paper ]
A 5 page synopsis of the 1992 biography of Michael Jordan by Sam Smith. The writer demonstrates that while Smith's biography shows a negative side to Jordan's character not seen by his adoring public, debunking the Jordan mystique was not Smith's intention. Smith succeeds in presenting Jordan, not as a godlike superstar, but rather it offers a picture of Michael Jordan as an ordinary person-flawed, moody, gifted and human.

My American Journey (1995) by Colin Powell
[ send me this paper ]
(5 pp) As long as man has told stories, he has
had heroes to talk about. Whether they are
two-legged or four-legged, they are generally
thoughtful and brave. We want, if not demand that
in a hero. In the telling of stories we have
determined that heroes are necessary elements of
our society, for it is their role to show us how
we might be, at our very best. It is possible that
just such a hero has surfaced in the form of Colin
Powell. In this discussion we will look at his own
story of 1995, entitled My American Journey.
