The Black Panthers' Rise and Local Influence
[ send me this paper ]
A 20 page paper discussing the origins
and activities of the Black Panther Party for Self-Defense, founded in 1966 by Huey
Newton and Bobby Seale. The group was portrayed in the press in the late 1960s and early
1970s only as a militant hate organization, a claim not without validity. However, the
Panthers also worked for social change not only by waving guns but by instituting free
breakfast programs in every city in which they had chapters, providing free medical clinics
where they operated long enough and encouraging black children to dream dreams and then
pursue them. The party was founded in Oakland, California, and its remaining leaders retain
an Oakland focus even though most now live elsewhere. The positive influence in Oakland
remains, and surviving leaders continue to work for further positive change for their race.
The paper traces the Panthers' origins, their diversion into communism and international
politics, and ends with a section addressing the Panthers' ongoing influence in Oakland.
Bibliography lists 16 sources.
