Betty Friedan's "The Feminine Mystique" And Eldridge
Cleaver's "Soul On Ice"
[ send me this paper ]
8 pages in length. Comparing the postwar work of Betty Friedan to that of Eldridge Cleaver is to draw a common denominator from two seemingly divergent perspectives. While Friedan's The Feminine Mystique addresses the cultural narrow-mindedness of gender, Cleaver's account in Soul On Ice focuses upon the long-standing racial inequities that have plagued man since the beginning of time. Clearly, to compare these two works encourages the student to seek out this common denominator; at the same time, however, the
student will also want to discuss the individual characteristics pertinent only to each specific book. No additional sources cited.

Black Equality: Reconstruction to the Present
[ send me this paper ]
An 8 page assessment of the struggle for black equality. Tracing key historical developments, the
author demonstrates that the Civil Rights Movement only succeeded in propelling blacks to the same level they had briefly attained in the 1870’s, a
position of at least semi-equality. The opinions as to the extent of true equality in our country today, however, vary radically. Many blacks
point to such phenomena as police brutality and racial profiling as evidence that equality has yet to be achieved. These same blacks seem to have
limited faith in our government's insuring this equality. At the same time, however, many are working within the system to do just that.
Bibliography lists 3 sources.

Black Experience: Civil War to the Present
[ send me this paper ]
The black experience in the United States is one which has been affected by a mindset of superiority of those that first bound them into slavery, by the societal segregation which haunted them for years after the end of the Civil War, and by numerous legislative attempts to make up for past wrongs. These attempts centered of course around the Civil Rights movement and friction between blacks and whites which continue to exist to this day. This paper presents the events which occurred throughout history from the perspective of its impact on the life of a fictional family of blacks who lived from the time of slavery to the present.

Black Power
[ send me this paper ]
5 pages in length. Black Power was a movement in the mid 1960's that sought to afford Blacks to opportunity to "define the world in their own terms" (Hiltz et al, 1998). Often misconstrued as a movement against Whites rather than for Black progress, Black Power was disseminated throughout the population by way of outspoken individuals and organizations via literature, popular culture and aggressive behavior. This precedence-setting movement was appealing to young urban youths because it empowered them with a sense of self that had not heretofore existed in the Black population; historically having to bow to White mandate, this was a time for Blacks of all ages to stand up for what they believed was right for their race. Bibliography lists 6 sources.

Black Women and their Reactions to Slavery
[ send me this paper ]
A 5 page analysis of the impact wielded by the institution of slavery on African Americans. African American women, in particular, had a tremendously varied reaction to slavery. These reactions varied from complete passivity, to outright violence, to societal action. This paper analyzes the stories related in “Celia, a Slave: A True Story”, “Sojourner Truth : A Life, a Symbol” and “A Black Woman's Civil War Memoirs” to emphasize that some reactions were obviously more effective than others in bringing about positive change. These reactions were shaped not only by the institution of slavery, however, but by the individual circumstances and experiences of individual women and those with whom she interacted. No additional sources are listed.
