Gay and Lesbian Culture? Not!
[ send me this paper ]
(11 pp). Unless you just arrived from an alien
planet in the last twenty minutes there is little
chance, that definition of gay or lesbian culture
is without some framework in your life. Gone are
the days when one could put there hand over their
mouth, gasp in horror, --"well I certainly don't
know any." Whether one makes judgments about this
"alternative life style," or same-sex couples is
another issue. We will be exploring where the
culture is today, in this paper.

Gender and Modernist Implications of Selected Portions of Virginia Woolf’s “The Waves”
[ send me this paper ]
A 6 page analysis of Virginia Woolf’s thematic presentation of women and their role society. Rather than resorting to the stereotypical images of women which so much predominated literature at this point in history, Woolf exposes us to a view of women which suggests independence and fortitude. Through this work we are presented with a significant reconsideration of culture and gender and pertinent observation on the way people act within a specific cultural context to deliberately alter those very contexts. Suggest that in many ways this book appears to be written in direct opposition to the concepts of Straussian theory, a theory of binary opposition between nature and culture which revolves around the economic value of the wife in a patriarchal society with the contention the woman was not a subject but an object to be bartered in the interest of promoting the all-important male status. Bibliography lists 3
sources.

An 8 page evaluation of the stereotypes which insist that women prefer one type of science fiction while men prefer another. Examines "Frankenstein" by Mary Shelley, "The Time Machine" by H. G. Wells, "Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?" by Philip K. Dick, "The Lathe of Heaven" by Ursula K. LeGuin, and "Neuromancer" by William Gibson and outlines the female author's likes and dislikes. Concludes that women have been given a voice and they can use that voice in creative endeavors such as the production of science fiction and they can also use that voice to speak out against the societal stereotypes which have bound them to male-defined roles for far too long in the pages of history.
