Women's Backseat Role in the Music Industry
[ send me this paper ]
A 6 page overview of the history of women in the music industry. Emphasizes that women have traditionally taken a backseat role in the industry. This is a role which is explored both directly and indirectly by the various authors included in the compendium of articles by Maxine Baca Zinn, Pierrette Hondagneu-Sotelo, and Michael A. Messner entitled "Gender Through the Prism of Difference". In this book four articles in particular stand out in their application to the history of women in the music industry. These articles are: Cynthia Enloe's "It Takes More Than Two: The Prostitute, the Soldier, the State, and the Entrepreneur", Arlene Stein's "Seventies Questions for Nineties Women", Rosemary Pringle's "Male Secretaries", and of course Melissa Klein's "Duality and Redefinition: Young Feminism and the Alternative Music Community". What is emphasized over and over again by each of these authors, is that the contemporary state of gender relations is the result of the injustices which have been rendered throughout history by a patriarchal society. Utilizes the examples of Melissa Etheridge and Tracy Chapman to illustrate this unfairness. No additional sources are listed.
