Business and Government in Canada
[ send me this paper ]
This is a 3 page paper discussing business and the Government of Canada relations. Historically, the Canadian government maintained a close relationship with businesses within Canada in that for the large part the Canadian government controlled and owned most of the major business sectors within the country such as natural resources, agriculture, and the transport industries to name a few. This ideology led to a nationalization of the country especially prior and during the years of World War II when Prime Minister Mackenzie King provided a great deal of financial investments in the development of business opportunities within Canada. By the second half of the 20th century, Canada had become a social and welfare state which began to take its toll on the economy and government. During the 1970s and 1980s, “downsizing” and the start of privatization of governmental industries began to take place. Today, the relationship between the Canadian government and business has changed significantly. Through financial support and trade policy, the Canadian government provides assistance to businesses which will encourage national and international investment in Canada. These businesses are those which are in high demand in the global market place and are those which are considered innovative, service-oriented, research, technology and knowledge-based in addition to the already established industries. Business and Government in Canada: Issues of Government Relations, The Role of Elites, Government Intervention, Regulation and Deregulation
[ send me this paper ]
This is a 3 page paper discussing business and government in Canada in regards to government intervention, business relations, the roles of elites and regulation. The history of Canadian business involves a great amount of government intervention within the business industry to the extent that most historical Canadian business ventures are those which had high government involvement such as the Canadian Pacific Railway and Air Canada. However many business critics believe that this intervention is based on the Canadian government’s basic belief that the government can do a better job of controlling the economic interests of business which is contrary to those within the business industry who believe that free markets and competition actually do a better job of distributing goods and services. The practice of the government however changed in the 1980s when pressure from the corporate elite within Canada lead to a new approach in government relations with business and industry which became one of deregulation, privatization, and assistance within the competitive marketplace. C.B. Macpherson's 'Life And Times Of Liberal Democracy'
[ send me this paper ]
C. B. Macpherson's critique of the concept of liberal democratic ideals is based primarily on the assignment of equality over liberty. The prioritization can be either implicit or explicit, but is a very real part of the democratic process, which was an outgrowth of market economics. The necessity of promoting competition is described as a liberal state that eventually evolved into the concepts of democratic radicalism. Macpherson proposes the revision of the liberal democratic ideals to include components of Marxist thought. This 5 page paper examines his arguments and concludes that the reader, after reading the book, The Life and Times of Liberal Democracy, will be able to gain access to some very logical insights that are very strong in their persuasive powers. No additional sources cited.

Cajun Company's Approach to Government Contracting
[ send me this paper ]
A 5 page paper discussing one company's justification for requesting exemption from government cost disclosure requirements. Cajun Company was acquired by a much larger organization active in government contracting. Cajun's senior management had avoided government contracting in the past, simply because of the weighty regulations surrounding it. An organization it has done business with over the years now has become a government contractor as well, and the government is requesting confidential and proprietary cost information from Cajun. The paper is a justification for exemption from such requirements, citing a DoD FAR class deviation in support of Cajun's arguments. Bibliography lists 1 source.

California : Impact Of The Women's Movement In Relation To Political Participation
[ send me this paper ]
5 pages in length. Turn-of-the-century California politics has changed in many ways in comparison to contemporary politics, particularly with regard to the women's movement. Indeed, women's suffrage presented itself in quite fearless style as the country moved into the twentieth century, inasmuch as the women's movement had gained a significant amount of progressive power. The impact of such a movement was more than a bit alarming for those who did not believe women should maintain such important responsibilities as voting and political participation. Fast-forward to the twenty-first century, however, and one can readily argue that the women's movement of one hundred years ago set the stage for the overwhelming support and presence the California political system now maintains. Bibliography lists 8 sources.

California Ballot Initiatives
[ send me this paper ]
A 16 page paper examining the evolution of the ballot initiative from a method by which grass root opinion could be translated into law to a tool of wealthy special interest groups with little concern for any outcome aside from supporting their own agendas. Budget by initiative is likely to continue since the Supreme Court refused in 1999 to limit the number of ballot initiatives that can be pursued in any one election. When special interest groups are able to remove more than 100 percent of state funds from the control of the state legislature, the now-crumbling system will be fully disabled and both reason and practicality will dictate redesign. As there is only a small percentage of total funds available to legislators and outside the dictates of completed initiatives, the crisis point likely is not far in the future. Bibliography lists 13 sources.
