H.D. Thoreau and M.L. King: Concerning Civil
Disobedience.
[ send me this paper ]
(5 pp). Thoreau was revived to popular icon status
in the sixties, as his messages were brought back
into popularity by Martin Luther King. For King ,
the writings of Thoreau provided an example of
the path of nonviolent resistance. In this
discussion we will use a cognitive approach to see
how Henry David Thoreau in "Resistance to Civil
Government" (1849), influences a "Letter from the
Burmingham Jail" (1961) by Martin Luther King.

Halperin's The Lawless State
[ send me this paper ]
It would seem that 'free society' is one
that is bounded by the ideals of community and assured peace through the
auspices of government. This 7 page paper argues that Morton Halperin's
book, The Lawless State: The Crimes Of U. S. Intelligence Agencies,
while being somewhat dated (first published in 1976), is an intelligent
indictment against those agencies where 'covert' is another word for
'power' and the SOP (standard operating procedure) is a misuse of that
power as well as a flagrant disregard of the Constitutional rights of
their 'victims'. No additional sources are listed.

Hamlet and Daisy Miller
[ send me this paper ]
The notion of 'identity' is often interwoven
with both status and character. In literature, the 'identity' of a
character is developed through a number of literary devices such as
dialogue, observation or the opinions of others. This 2 page paper
compares and contrasts the identity of Shakespare's Hamlet and Henry
James' Daisy Miller. No additional sources are listed.

Hard Times: An Oral History of the Great Depression by Studs
Terkel
[ send me this paper ]
5 pages in length. We have all heard stories and read
about the Great Depression, but it still seems long ago and
faintly unreal to those who did not really experience it. What
was it really like to go hungry, to lose everything almost over
night, and walk barefooted for lack of shoes? This is a concise
and detailed review of the book by Studs Terkel.

Hawthorne and Poe: The Mind Under the Influence
[ send me this paper ]
(5 pp.) Both of these American writers wanted to do
more than entertain people; they wanted to
influence how people thought, or how they perceived
the world. My premise is that Hawthorne
wanted to influence the conscious mind through
parable or fable. Poe was more of a mental
subterranean, and wanted to reach the unconscious
mind, through the doorway of fear. The writer
will examine Poe's stories, "The Tell-tale Heart"
and "The Oval Portrait," and Hawthorne's short
story, "Rappaccinni's Daughter", to determine if
they fit the proposed premise. Bibliography
lists 8 sources.
