Paul, as the novel's first-person narrator,
describes a series of incidents and impressions of
war through his own eyes. One main theme of the
novel is how war creates feelings of isolation and
disillusionment. The novel also represents a
generation destroyed by the dehumanization of the
war as slugged out in the trenches.
