The United States Colored Troops
[ send me this paper ]
This 8 page report discusses
the involvement of African-American troops and regiments in the
Civil War. The struggle for the right to become a “Colored Yankee
Soldier” lasted for two years of the Civil War before President
Lincoln knew that the time had finally come to take advantage of
the many “colored” soldiers willing but not allowed to fight.
Initially, the president and his advisors hesitated as to whether
or not it was “safe” to place guns in the hands of black men.
Doing so might elevate them to a status white America would be
unwilling to abide. In 1863, soon after the signing of the
Emancipation Proclamation, Frederick Douglass called out: “Men of
Color, to arms!” Approximately 200,000 answered that call.

The United States Of America: Consequences Of Colonialism In California
[ send me this paper ]
7 pages in length. Spanish and Mexican settlement of California ended up the same as so many other colonization attempts: the native Indian populations were ultimately uprooted from their homeland and either relocated or slowly phased out of existence. That the Spanish and Mexican governments may have originally wanted to pursue California in both a stable and harmonious way was not achieved by any stretch of the imagination, inasmuch as the presence of war, indigenous denial and brute force was employed as a means by which to attain their final objective. The US Annexation of Hawaii
[ send me this paper ]
An 8 page overview of the economic and political factors surrounding the 1898 US annexation of Hawaii. Because of its location and tremendously productive environment, Hawaii is a strategically important military and economic accouterment. The sugar industry which existed at the time of annexation were obvious factors in the desirability of Hawaii to both the United States and Japan. Equally as important, however, was the strategic location of the islands from a military perspective. Outlines the growing Japanese presence in Hawaii in the years preceding annexation and contends that if the decision had not have been made to annex Hawaii the Japanese would have taken the islands. Notes the duality of impacts of US annexation including the tremendous cultural and physical impacts sustained by the Hawaiian people. Bibliography lists 7 sources.

The Use of Historical Fiction in the Classroom
[ send me this paper ]
This 6 page report discusses historical fiction and its applications for education and use in the classroom. The point is argued that in many circumstances, history is easier to learn, understand, and remember if a reader feels a connection to a paticular character or story. Creating such a connection is often best accomplished through the use of historical fiction. However, the challenge is to maintain the accuracy of the events while still telling an engaging story that pulls the reader into the experience. Bibliography lists 4 sources.
